Those who choose sustainable products generally want them to last as long as possible. This is exactly where proper care comes in. Our hejhej products are designed to accompany you for many years. In this article, we will also show you three simple tips on how to care for your products sustainably to support and maintain their longevity and appearance.
Tip 1: Regular, gentle cleaning instead of intensive deep cleaning
Often, less is more. We recommend regular, but gentle care of your yoga products – instead of cleaning them rarely, but intensively and with chemical agents.
For your hejhej-mat and hejhej-blocks, it is perfectly sufficient to wipe them down with a damp cloth after your practice. This prevents sweat or dirt from settling in. For a more thorough cleaning, you can use natural cleaning agents, such as our ecological hejhej-spray, which is specially formulated for the materials. The essential oils (lemon and bergamot oil) and sage distillate it contains clean effectively without damaging the surface or leaving harmful residues.

Important: Avoid chemical cleaning agents or disinfectant sprays. These can damage the materials in the long term and significantly shorten the lifespan of your products.
Tip 2: Gentle care for textiles
The same applies to our textile products such as the hejhej-pillow and the hejhej-bolster: gentle care pays off.

The outer covers are removable and washable, which makes care particularly easy. Nevertheless, we recommend washing them as gently as possible by hand. Use a mild, ecological detergent and lukewarm water. This keeps the fibers intact longer and maintains the shape.
If you do decide to use a washing machine, be sure to use a gentle program with a low temperature and avoid heavy spinning. Air drying is the best choice here. Please do not tumble dry, as this unnecessarily stresses the material.
Our hejhej-blanket is washable at 30 degrees. We recommend a gentle cycle, wool wash program, or hand wash to increase longevity. Use a liquid wool or delicate detergent and avoid fabric softener. Using a laundry bag is ideal for additional protection of the blanket. After washing, you should select the spin cycle for wool or delicate items. Tumble drying is also possible at low temperatures. Alternatively, you can simply air out the blanket outdoors to avoid washing as much as possible. Please do not bleach or iron.
Generally: Only wash your covers when absolutely necessary. Often, airing them out or spot cleaning is sufficient.
One more note: If your pillows appear less plump after a long time, you can easily reorder our refill material, hejhej-husk, from us and refill it to your liking.

Tip 3: Proper storage
In addition to cleaning, storage also plays a decisive role in care. Ideally, you should store your yoga equipment dry in a dark place after your practice.
You should avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, especially for the hejhej-mat, as UV rays can alter the material. At this point, it is important for us to be transparent: We deliberately decided against the use of chemical UV blockers during development, although these are used in most conventional yoga mats.
The reason for this is simple: many of these chemical additives can be problematic for both the environment and our bodies. Especially with a product like a yoga mat, with which your skin is in regular and intensive contact, we did not want to make any compromises here. From the beginning, it was clear to us that we wanted to develop a material that was as free of harmful substances and as safe as possible.
This conscious decision brings many advantages but also means that our mats are somewhat more sensitive to UV radiation. Our light hejhej-mat, in particular, can turn yellowish/beige over time with frequent or intense sun exposure. This is a purely visual effect and has no influence on the quality, functionality, or longevity of your mat. Important to know: The discoloration occurs gradually, not through cleaning, and cannot be reversed afterwards. However, you can always ensure that it does not worsen by protecting your mat better from direct sun in the future, for example by storing it in the hejhej-bag.

If you already know that you want to practice outdoors a lot – for example, in the park or while traveling – we recommend choosing the dark hejhej-mat directly. Possible discolorations are not visible here, so you don't have to worry about them.
Why sustainable care is so important
The tips show: Sustainability does not end with the purchase of a product. It continues in its use. With proper care, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your hejhej products and at the same time conserve resources.
By avoiding aggressive chemicals, washing gently, and storing your products consciously, you actively contribute to reducing waste and protecting the environment.
Our products are designed to accompany you long-term. With a little attention in everyday life, you get the best out of them, for your practice and for the environment.
